Paul Sheehan, Ph.D.

Dr. Sheehan received his Ph.D. for Harvard University in Chemical Physics, working on the fundamentals of nanoscale mechanics, research named one of the top 10 discoveries of the decade in Materials Science. He then moved to the US Naval Research Laboratory to continue research in nanotechnology but also to integrate electronics into biosensing, eventually leading the Nanoscale Science and Biosensing Section. In 2017, he moved to DARPA’s Biological Technologies Office to develop control systems for biology, integrating bioelectronics, synthetic biology, and synthetic ecology to form control systems for biological networks. During his time there, he started six programs, the highest ever in that office, totaling more than $350M. In February of 2023, he joined ARPA-H as its first program manager. He has already launched 4 projects and just announced a program that unites synthetic biology and bioelectronics.
