The distance is about 200 meters, or one-tenth of a mile.
  2. Taking the “NIH campus route” (purple, 5-minute travel time or red, 25-minute travel time) shuttle to the William H. The NIH campus is located in Bethesda, Maryland, just 10 miles from the center of Washington, D.C.

Public Transportation: Metrorail service is available from Washington’s Ronald Reagan National Airport (DCA), Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) and from Union Station (railway). Take Metro’s Red Line to the Medical Center Station. The station’s escalators exit onto the NIH campus. Pedestrians entering the campus will need to enter via Gateway Center, which is the main visitor entrance. Gateway Center is open Monday through Friday, 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Driving to NIH: When driving to NIH, plan some extra time to get through the security checkpoints at the visitor entrances to campus. Be aware that visitor parking lots on the NIH campus can fill up quickly. Consider taking public transportation.

For visitors arriving in vehicles, on motorcycles or on bicycles, the Gateway Vehicle Inspection Station (Building 66A), provides multiple inspection lanes and allows visitors to go through inspection and get a visitor badge in one centralized, efficient process. Vehicles enter the Gateway Center complex through a new roadway, “NIH Gateway Drive,” just south of the intersection of the previous visitor entrance at South Drive and Rockville Pike. Vehicles that choose to bypass parking in MLP-11 will go through inspection and enter campus at Center Drive. (See Gateway Map:

Parking. Please note: Visitor parking is limited at NIH. Visitors are encouraged to use public transportation such as the Metrorail subway system, which has a convenient stop (Medical Center) on the NIH campus. Visit the Metro site for information on fares and schedules.

The Gateway complex includes MLP-11, a 342-space, multi-level underground parking garage. This “visitor-only” lot is the primary visitor parking for the NIH main campus. We strongly encourage all visitors who must drive to park in this garage, as visitor parking elsewhere on campus is limited. Vehicles parking in MLP-11 are outside of the perimeter security and will not go through vehicle inspection, reducing the amount of time it takes to get on campus.

Visitors parking in MLP-11 should proceed to the Gateway Center to get a visitor badge and either walk or take a shuttle bus to their destination.

The cost to park in MLP-11 is $2 per hour for the first three hours, $12 maximum for the entire day.

Access and Security at NIH

The NIH has implemented security measures to help ensure your safety. All visitors must enter through the NIH Gateway Center at Metro or the West Gateway Center. You will be asked to submit to a vehicle or personal inspection.

Visitors must provide a form of government-issued photo ID such as a driver’s license or passport.

NIH Point of Contact – NIH staff members will be stationed at the Gateway Center during the check-in period on both meeting days. If you arrive when an NIH staff member is not present at the gateway center, you will be asked by security to provide an NIH point of contact to approve your entry on campus. Contact information can be found below:

Personal Inspections – All visitors should be prepared to submit to a personal inspection prior to entering the campus. These inspections may be conducted with a handheld monitoring device, a metal detector and by visible inspection. Additionally, your personal belongings may be inspected and passed through an x-ray machine.

Visitor passes must be prominently displayed at all times while on the NIH campus.

Vehicle Inspections – All vehicles and their contents will be inspected upon entering the campus. Additionally, all vehicles entering certain parking areas will be inspected, regardless of any prior inspection. Drivers will be required to present their driver’s license and may be asked to open the trunk and hood. If you are physically unable to perform this function, please inform the inspector and they will assist you.

Vehicle inspection may consist of any combination of the following: Detection Dogs Teams (K-9), Electronic Detection Devices and Manual Inspection.

After inspection, you will be issued a vehicle inspection pass. It must be displayed on your vehicle’s dashboard while you are on campus. The inspection pass is not a “parking permit.” It only grants your vehicle access to enter the campus. You can only park in designated parking areas.
